Summary of new Macromedia Flash features
'Zeh' has posted a good summary of the information which is out there about the new version of Macromedia Flash, code named '8ball' and 'Maelstrom'.
The information is mostly accurate, if a bit incomplete. While the new features are exciting, I can assure everyone that we also spent time fixing many older graphics related issues. The format itself has limitations and therefore some things will stay as they are, but there is still room for improving some areas which have been the source of frustration for many users.
In the end I hope we'll be able to make this version the most important one ever, maybe since Flash 5. From how it looks we are on track so far with all the excitement we have generated out there.

Are you referring to the bitmap shift/distortion problems? Hope so.
Yes, we will try to address as many of these problems as possible for Flash Player 8.
I'm a flash devoloper from china. I'm doing some application with flash recently, like guestbook, blog, photo gallery etc. I found that textfield is really too week to build a power rich internet application. And I'm wondering if we can do:
1.load progressive jpg,gif and png in the feature?
I think this is realy important, especially progressive and gif, because I'm working on some application which allows user to add images form their computer or from other sites. Anyway, to restrict the file type is not always so friendly, and what we do now is to transform those image to normal jpg at server.
2.edit images in the textarea?
select,copy,cut and delete.
3.autoPosition when text is changed?
otherwise, it'll be very hard to devolop rich text editor with live images.
4.replaceSel with empty string?
it's a little bit strange why cannot we replaceSel with "", I hate this since mx, and I realy thought you would change this by 2004. It's more like a bug than a problem.
as a flash devoloper, I must know what can the next generation flash do in advance, and we can change our plan to follow it. I'm waiting your answer eagerly.
best regards!
(I'm trying my best to explain things clearly with my baby English:), if it is painful to read those words, sorry!)
another thing is:
you should add mouse events(onRollover,onRollOut) to links. with this function we can tell our users more information about the link(the url or some descripton)before they click it.
:)
It's really important to know those functions in advance, normally we can find other ways to solve those problem, but that's always a lot of works. We had had spent weeks on one little problem last year.
Did anyone ever succeed to use replaceSel() properly? If I use it using a button next to a textfield, the selection deselects and the textfield loses focus. So nothing happens. In the best case the text gets inserted at position 0.
ReplaceText(int, int, text) works fine as long as you hardcode the int, int parameters. As soon as you want Selection.beginIndex(),Selection.endIndex() you get an invalid -1,-1 because when you click the button to do the action, focus is lost and Selection does not work. If you regain focus by invoking Selection.setFocus(myTextField) the user selection is still lost and the entire contents of the textfield gets replaced. This is not only weak, it does not do what its suggests it can do.
